Guest lecture on "Machine Learning and role of Patents in Economic growth" organized by the Department of Electronic Engineering on 19.12.2019

Department of Electronics organized a guest lecture on “Machine Learning and role of Patents in Economic growth” on 19.12.2019 at IT Building for faculty and staff members of the faculty of electrical, electronics and computer system engineering. The guest speaker of this lecture was Dr. Mohammad Mohsin Siraj who is working as a patent attorney trainee in Philips lighting (now known as Signify) for more than two years. The session started with the recitation of the Holy Quran by Mr. Bilal.

Dr. Tayab Din Memon Chairman Department of Electronic Engineering opened the session and welcomed the guest speaker, chief guest, and all faculty/student participants. He shed some light on importance of the machine learning and patents importance in economy of any country.

Prof. Dr. Mukhtiar Ali Unar DEAN Faculty of Electrical, Electronic & Computer System Engineering as a chief guest welcomed the guest speaker for coming all the way from Holland and emphasized on developing projects related to machine learning and developing skills that are required to our national and market trends.

Dr. Attiya introduced the guest speaker and acknowledged his excellence achieved throughout his career and told that Dr. Mohsin received his Bachelor’s degree from Electronic Engineering Department of MUET, Jamshoro; MSc and PhD degrees from Electrical Engineering Department of Eindhoven University of Technology, Netherlands in Systems and Control. Further she thanked Dr. Mohsin on submission of his volunteer expression of interest to conduct guest lecture in his alma mater and invited him for his guest lecture.

Dr. Mohsin in his guest lecture talked on Importance of Artificial Intelligence in various areas especially Medical Sciences, Psychology, Agriculture and other aspects of life. He discussed basics of machine learning, its algorithms, applications, prospect BE & ME projects and explained how to train a ML model. He also performed a fun activity and demonstrated through a live demo for training ML model.

In second half of the session he covered role of patents in knowledge economy. He emphasized on owing research through academic publications and patents. He shed some light on patents’ use for universities.

The seminar was full of information and interactive; the guest speaker had a great impression on the audience for not letting them loose concentration for a single moment. The audience greatly admired the session through the feedback forms at the end of the session.

At the end of the session an appreciation shield was presented to Dr. Mohsin as a token of thanks by DEAN FEECE and Chairman Department of Electronics. Dr. Mohsin also presented copy of his PhD thesis as a memento to the DEAN FEECE Prof. Dr Mukhtiar A. Unar and Chairman Department of Electronic Engineering. He also showed his willingness to visit university again during his current visit to Pakistan and has proposed various suggestions to play his role in building and strengthening alumni network for Department of Electronic especially the alumni residing in foreign countries.

The seminar ended with a group photo of faculty and students with the guest speaker.
