Inauguration of World Space Week  2012

The Inaugural Ceremony of World Space Week (WSW) - 2012, organized by Department of Telecommunication Engineering, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), Jamshoro  and Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), held on Tuesday, 09 Oct 2012 at Main Auditorium Building of Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), Jamshoro. From SUPARCO, DG, SPARC, SUPARCO Mr. Shafiq Ahmed was the Guest of Honour. Prof. Dr. A. Q. K. Rajput, Vice Chancellor, MUET, Jamshoro was the Chief Guest of the Inaugural ceremony who formally inaugurated the World Space Week celebrations held on 09 - 10 Oct 2012. The inauguration ceremony started with recitation of holy verses from Quran followed by the welcome speech by the Registrar, MUET, Jamshoro, Prof. Dr. Tauha Hussain Ali.  Terming the event a success, Prof. Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan Rajput, the Vice Chancellor of MUET, during his address said that it is high time that our country appreciates the importance of using space technologies to develop home grown solutions to the problems faced before and after natural disasters which have caused misery to hundreds of thousands of people.

Mr. Shafiq Ahmed, DG, SPARC, SUPARCO, echoed the words of Dr. Rajput and said that SUPARCO was closely working with public sector universities such as MUET to develop methods which can solve the local problem through indigenous resources. Thanking the Chief guest, the guest of honour, participants and the audience Prof. Dr. Aftab Ahmed Memon, Chairman department of Telecommunication Engineering, MUET, Jamshoro highlighted the importance of the event and its impact on students  perception about science. The ceremony was followed by two parallel competitions; Declamation contest and Water Rocket Competition and a planetarium exhibition Pakistan Science Foundation.

Declamation Contest was held at Main Auditorium Building of Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), Jamshoro. Students from various private and public schools presented their arguments on the World Space Week 2012 theme “Space for Human Safety and Security” suggesting greater emphasis on usage and application of space technology for the benefits and security of human beings. Speeches delivered by students reflected their sound knowledge related to space technologies and their applications.

Simultaneously, Water Rocket competition was held at Sports Ground, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), Jamshoro. 25 Teams from different Schools participated in the event. The participants were already trained by their teachers who had participated in the Water Rocket Teacher’s Training Workshop, held on 19th September, 2012 at Sports Ground, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), Jamshoro. The teams prepared their rockets from the recyclable cheap materials easily available in our daily life. After the preparation of the rockets they were launched at the launching area. A lot of students came to see the launching of rockets. They showed interest and enthusiasm in the water rocket Competition which helped them understand the rocket science.

The decision of the winner was based on how close the rocket had fallen from the target post after its launch at given pressure of 75 psi.

On prize distribution ceremony marking the closing of World Space Week 2012 celebrations will be held during the space family fair on 10 October 2012 at 03:00 pm, where award prizes will be distributed to the winners of all competitions.   The space fair comprises of various modules such as model making competition by the students, space Movie Theater, moving planetarium, space related book fair, telescope for space observations, kids’ arena, display of TELECOM departments projects, etc.

Space Fair and Closing Ceremony

A grand “Space Fair” marked the second day of World Space Week (WSW) Celebrations - 2012 at Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), Jamshoro on 10th October, 2012. It was organized by Department of Telecommunication Engg, MUET, Jamshoro and Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO).

The fair included SUPARCO Stalls exhibiting models of different rockets and satellites, Space Photography, Kids Arena, Planetarium by Pakistan Science Foundation, Telecom department Projects,  among many other exciting things.

Model making competition was also arranged as part of the Space Fair. Twelve teams from different private and public schools exhibited their models on the World Space Week 2012 theme “Space for Human Safety and Security” suggesting greater emphasis on usage and application of space technology for the benefits and security of human beings. Models made by students reflected their sound knowledge related to space technologies and their applications. Pakistan Science Foundation also exhibits the planetarium at MUET auditorium which was highly attracted by the students of all ages.

Closing ceremony at 03:00 pm marked the official ending of World Space Week 2012 celebrations. It included prize distribution ceremony where award prizes were distributed to the winners of all competitions. The Guest of honour, Dr. Shafiq Ahmed khan, DG, SPARC, SUPARCO  highlighted the need of peaceful use of space and its importance to create awareness among the youth. The Chief Guest, Prof. Dr. M. A. Uqaili, Pro-Vice Chancellor, MUET shared his esteemed thoughts with the audience and emphasize that such events should be on continual basis. He also appreciated the efforts of department of Telecommunication Engineering, MUET, Jamshoro for organizing such a informative yet entertaining event. Dr. Faisal K. Shaikh, Associate Professor, Department of telecommunication Engg, MUET thanked the entire team of Department of Telecommunication Engineering, headed by Prof. Dr. Aftab A. Memon, for their endless efforts and sleepless nights to make the event successful. He also thanked SUPARCO team for their cooperation and support.
