FSO Link Establishment between Telecommunication Department and IIT Building
10/10/2012 - 11:43am
A post graduate student project team consisting of Naveed Ahmed and Abi Waqas under the supervision of Dr. Fahim A. Umrani and Prof. Bhawani S. Chowdhry have established a free space optical link between the Telecommunication Department and IIT Building. This would work as an alternative or back up communication link to the optical fiber backbone of the campus.
The established link has very low size, weight and power requirements, and is very difficult to detect or jam. The link successfully transmits 8 GB data wirelessly in less than one minute at the distance of 100 meters which can be further extended up to 1500 meters. Furthermore experiments are being conducted for transmitting/receiving medical data to validate its usability as the health monitoring and disaster recovery rapidly deployable communication link.
This project is funded by Higher Education Commission of Pakistan. Also note that another team lead by Dr. Fahim A. Umrani is deploying a Microwave link between TL department and ICPC Building. This would perhaps make the Telecommunication department of Mehran UET Pakistan unique in a sense that it would become the only department of Pakistan with LAN, Optical fiber backbone, Wifi and Wireless LANs, Weather Satellite, Radars, Free space optical link and Microwave link!
