TEDxMUET held at Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro, first-of-its-kind in the region

On 22nd February 2021 Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro hosted the first-ever TEDx conference of the region, TEDxMUET at the auditorium of the US Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Water. The conference was graced by the speakers of different fields of life, who shared the ideas worth spreading.
Keeping in view the COVID-19 situation, SOPs were followed strictly and 100 participants including students, faculty members, alumni, entrepreneurs, media persons, and social activists were allowed to attend the conference physically.
The event was hosted by Prof. Dr. Tauha Hussain Ali, pro-vice-chancellor, MUET, and Mr. Saqib Abro, whereas Prof. Dr. Aslam Uqaili, vice-chancellor, MUET presented the welcome address.
The event was followed by 6 different speakers and their talks. Syed Abul Fazal Rizvi, CEO, Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company talked about their contributions towards making Thar a prosperous treasure. He put light on how they have benefited the local community, under whose feet the treasure of coal lies.
A young soul working on the mission of zero hunger, Mr. Ubaid ur Rehman shared his journey, challenges, and achievements. He, with his teamwork under the slogan “One Meal Can Heal”. They collect leftover and surplus food from different places and deliver it to needy blue-collar families.
Artificial Intelligence is ruling the world today, Mr. Shahzad Rasheed, CTO, Huawei Pakistan talked about the threats and opportunities of AI.
The glory of overcoming obstacles can be seen in the life of Baba Rajkumar. His contribution to the community is just commendable. He is a true example of how differently-abled people of this society can pay back to the community. He shared his talk and attendees loved it.
To connect the minds for entrepreneurship, Mr. Rehan Allahwala rocked the floor. The lesson from his talk was like an igniting flame to spark the light.
The last speaker, Mr. Imdad Ali Nizamani presented his talk on the art of community engagement. In 9 years, contributions made from the community were around 8 crores making a huge difference in the living standards of the people of his village, Tando Soomro.
The audience was entertained by Ustad Shahid Ali’s performance on Sitar - the instrumental performance just relaxed the souls. Another thought-provoking performance was made by the members of Mehran University Debating and Dramatic Society. They portrayed how the trans community is treated differently and the theme of their play was “Meri Pehchan Kya Hai?”.
In the end, the attendees, speakers, guests, and organizing team members were awarded the certificates and goodie bags. Licensee and lead organizer of the event Engr. Salman Abbasi, along with advisory board members, executive team members, and volunteers were acknowledged for making TEDxMUET a huge success. The conference ended with the vote of thanks by Dr. Zeeshan Khatri chairman department of Textile Engineering, MUET.
