INTRODUCTION
The BS (Hons) in English at the Centre of English Language and Linguistics (CELL) equips students with analytical skills which are applicable to various situations and professions. The program structure focuses on language functions, language structure, linguistic variation, language assessment, Language and technology, literary criticism, drama, fiction, and distinct genres specifically with reference to the distinct literary history in Pakistan.
The course of BS English (Hons) consists of literature and Linguistics. Both streams are intertwined and linked to the study of language. CELL has a very dynamic, challenging, innovative teaching and research in both literature and linguistics. The faculty members are accomplished linguists, writers and researchers with experience working in Pakistan as well as abroad. This makes them able to convey ideas clearly and effectively. The students, at CELL, not only learn theoretical underpinnings but they are also provided with the strong and effective application of the concepts in the field.
The program is designed in a way that helps the students to prepare for lifelong effective communication in English. Through this, the students broaden their vision and get a deep insight into language and literature.
Importantly, the BS English students, at CELL, are prepared for research in language and literature within and outside Pakistan. Eventually, the students can opt to join diverse careers as editors, copywriters, EFL teachers, lexicographers, phoneticians, Secondary school teachers, journalists, etc.
OBJECTIVE
The BS English program aims to equip students with an understanding of key issues and research findings in methodology, theory and analysis, and the underlying values and principles of the field, and with the skills to make a significant professional contribution to the field
PROCEDURE
Students study nine courses over the period of eight semesters. In total, they earn 139 credit hours. After that, the successful and eligible students start their research work at the end of 6th semester. They are required to research any linguistic or applied linguistic niche issue which develops through an initial seminar followed by a final seminar. It culminates into an oral thesis defence viva and a thesis production of at least 12,000 words.
ADMISSION
60% marks in Intermediate (BISE) or at least 50% Cambridge Education (A-levels) are eligible to apply for BS English.
