MS Linguistics

Introduction

MS in applied Linguistics is CELL’s most successful and its alumni are working at the leading universities of Pakistan. This program aims to extend the limits of the knowledge and skills of those who are interested in carrying out research in English Linguistics. It trains students with an understanding of key issues and research findings in English Linguistics, and with the skills to make a significant professional contribution to the field at large. The entire program is in line with the vision of Higher Education Commission of Pakistan with intent to produce prospective leadership and knowledge building among our students.

 

OBJECTIVES:

The MS program at CELL has following documented measurable objectives:

i. The students should understand and address the issues currently at the forefront of research in English Language Teaching/Applied Linguistics.
ii. After completion of the program, the linguist post graduate should have
   a. an understanding of how theory relates to practice
   b. A broader view of the links between classroom activity and approaches to program design, teacher training and management decisions.
   c. Comprehensive skills to conduct research in the field.
   d. The opportunity to extend professional experience by working with others from different educational and language backgrounds

 

PROCEDURE:

Students study nine courses over the period of three semesters. In total, they earn 36 credit hours. After that, the successful and eligible students start their research work. They are required to conduct research on any linguistic or applied linguistic niche issue which develops through an initial seminar followed by a final seminar. It culminates into an oral thesis defence viva and a thesis production of at least 20,000 words.

CAREER:

Many of the members of our department, grad students, post-docs, and faculty members, work directly with language consultants to describe, analyze, revitalize, and understand the language learning process. Our graduates have been seeking career opportunities at different universities, working with local and national government on the English curriculum development, translation studies and other relevant fields of language and linguistics.  Moreover, our research students are actively engaged in research from the moment they enter the department, and they have an outstanding record of publishing and presenting their work at national and international conferences and in peer-reviewed journals.

ADMISSION

BS in English from HEC recognized University with minimum 3.0 CGPA (out of 4.0 in the semester system or first division (in Annual system) in 4-years bachelor’s degree (4-years university education).
